Post Hurricane Checklist for Homeowners and Landlords

A hurricane can be a serious threat to one’s family and home.  There is never such a thing as being too prepared and knowing what to look for after a hurricane has struck.  Provided is a list of things a homeowner should check after having experienced a hurricane to make sure there is no imminent danger in their home.

  • Check the roof, windows, and doors – Make sure to have someone walk the roof and look for damage that could cause leaks into the attic of the home.  It is equally important to check all soffits, window, and door wells for proper sealants to make sure that water has not leaked into these areas.  If you have a water problem in one of these areas, it could cause serious dry rot which will be the beginning of some very serious future repairs!
  • Observe all home landscaping – Make sure any debris that may now be loose is removed.  This would include any trees, tree limbs, and shrubs that may either cause damage to your home or could potentially injure any person or guest near the home.  It is unwise to leave anything unattended that may cause injury on personal property.
  • Check all duct work and major appliances – You will want to check you’re Air Conditioner outside to make sure everything is in proper order.  You will also want to check your duct work as well as hot water heater.  With high winds and rains, it is unlikely, but can cause serious issues with these elements.

When a natural disaster of this magnitude hits it can cause serious damage to one’s home and livelihood.  It is recommended to always have a professional do a walkthrough of a home to make sure there is nothing unsafe and dangerous.  If there are any further questions please contact us and we would be happy to help answer your questions.
